Some people form lifelong relationships while pursuing their degrees at traditional universities, and this trend is beginning to appear in online school environments as well.

The Internet is a tool that many have learned to leverage for both professional and personal reasons. Virtual businesses offer consumers a chance to hunt down the best bargains, and social networking sites allow individuals to maintain relationships and create new ones too. So it's only natural that online student communities are beginning to form in the virtual world.

Find Online Degree Programs

Second Life is a virtual community where members connect for a variety of reasons. At the beginning of the 2009 school year, the University of Maryland introduced Second Life to all of its first-year students to help them get acquainted, according to Virtual World News.

California State University (CSU) also uses the Internet to bring people together. CSU's Stanislaus campus has an online student community page on Facebook that has members from California and abroad. Sharing experiences can be a good way to build relationships, and pursuing the same line of study is no exception. Some conventional and online students might find they have a lot to discuss when they connect through the Internet.
