Trends in Online Education for 2009By Jennifer Wegerer Online education has come a long way. Critics may once have considered getting an online degree a second-tier alternative to classroom education, but in 2009, its time has arrived. The Sloan Consortium reports that the number of students enrolled in online degree programs has more than tripled in the last five years—from just under 500,000 in 2002 to approximately 3.9 million taking at least one online course as of fall, 2007. What's more, as of 2005, 56 percent of schools identified online education as a critical, long-term strategy. What to Expect from Online EducationWith so many Americans pursuing online options for their higher education, what trends can the public expect from the industry to meet the mounting demand for online education? Here are a few things to look for in the next year:
