This might involve looking for health hazards such as asbestos or physical dangers like unsafe walkways or staircases. The BLS reports that 40 percent of occupational health and safety specialists work for a government agency. The US Department of Labor operates the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which was created in 1971, according to its website. Since that time, occupational deaths have been reduced by 62 percent and injuries by 42 percent.
