Sports management is an umbrella term that refers to a variety of sports-related business activities, like sport marketing, sport ethics and sport law, according to the Winthrop University department of physical education. Though some professionals who are involved in leading professional sports teams have degrees in sports management, this field of study can lead to other careers as well. Osprey Packs is a company that manufactures backpacks designed for hiking. In November of 2009, Osprey announced it had hired Sarah Harper Burke as its new program pack and pro purchase manager. Burke has a master's degree in sports management and marketing from the University of Tennessee. She used to work as the kayak operations manager for the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Burke is only one example of a professional who received a sports management degree and went on to work in business. Many other professionals who have received such an education choose to go into business rather than into team management.
