Financial Aid Available to Online School StudentsBy the All Online Schools career research team – Your link to Online School news, trends and programs Although many online degree programs are more affordable than those offered by traditional universities, some online school students require financial aid because they have decided to finance their educations themselves or perhaps because their families are already paying for the tuition of another sibling. Some prospective students wonder if financial aid is available to individuals who plan to study through an online school. Northern Michigan University offers both conventional and virtual courses and its student information page says that people who qualify for financial assistance as on-campus participants can likely receive aid if they choose to study online instead. Applying for financial aid is the same process for every kind of student. The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). According to the FAFSA website, to complete this application, an individual must be a US citizen, have a social security number, have a high school diploma or General Education Development Certificate and be accepted at a higher education institution like a traditional or online school. If the student is deemed eligible for aid, he or she may be offered a grant, loan or entry into a work-study program. For some students, paying for tuition out of pocket is impossible, which is why the government asks individuals to complete the FAFSA. The US Department of Education will provide more than $116 billion this year to help students go to school, according to its website.
