Take Your iPhone to Online School
iPhone applications, or apps, are the hottest thing around for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch owners—and all sorts of technophiles, from independent developers to college and university computer science programs, are taking note. Generally, though, it costs programmers a $99 fee to create, test, and distribute their app, even if they ultimately make a profit from selling it through the App Store. But now, thanks to Apple's new iPhone Developer University Program, qualified colleges, universities and online schools can produce apps at no cost.
Higher education institutions who want to take part in the program usually do so as part of their curriculum in application development. Apple's program offers development resources, testing and debugging tools, and the ability to share applications and information within a development team of up to 200 students. If they wish, individual students can then make their apps available in the App Store for distribution—and profit.
Application development curriculum is already being offered at a number of high-profile institutions, including Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Other colleges, from brick-and-mortar campuses to online schools, are sure to follow suit. If you're on the lookout for online schools that offer classes in the latest technological innovations, keep your eyes open for courses in app development.
