Are Online Degree Programs the Solution to Rising Tuition Costs?

During difficult economic times, many workers turn to higher education as a way to increase their value in the job market. Unfortunately, tough times affect institutions of higher education just as they affect individual students, and public colleges and universities across the country are forced to raise tuition as one way of helping cover costs during times of lean federal education funding.

On the state level, too, recently passed budgets reveal that belts are tightening across the country, and large public university systems such as the California State Universities and the Indiana university system have been forced to pass the financial burden along to students in order to survive. Increases of 5 to 6 percent are predicted on average, but the jump could be much higher in some cases—20 percent at the CSU campuses. During tough times like these, the solution may lie in online degree programs.

Not only are online degree programs a cost-effective measure for cash-strapped institutions—particularly those forced to cap enrollment, like the California Community Colleges—they also help students save money. Online degree programs reduce or eliminate the costs associated with transportation, as well as enabling students to continue working while attending school. Moreover, an accredited online degree program can offer students federal financial aid to help offset tuition costs. If you're worried about the cost of higher education, consider earning your degree online.
