A nationally-approved online school recently announced that it has added a new course to its list of programs. The school tailors its programs to the needs of psychologists, social workers, counselors and nurses and its new class is called Harm Reduction: A Comprehensive Response to Substance Related Disorders.

There are more deaths, illnesses and disabilities related to substance abuse in this country than from any other preventable health condition, according to the National Institute of Drug Addiction. One in four deaths is caused either by alcohol, tobacco or drugs.

"Harm reduction is a relatively new and controversial approach to treating substance disorders that is considered pragmatic, humanistic, easily accessible and focused on immediate goals," said Coreena Hendrickson, the author of the class. The course will help students understand the concept of harm reduction and explain how the movement has created controversy.

This particular online school offers programs that cover a wide range of topics including women's health, cultural diversity, eating disorders, clinical intervention, group therapy, infectious disease, neuropsychology and pain management.
