For Online Schools, Accreditation is Key

With the plethora of online schools out there, how do you know you're getting a quality education for your time and monetary investment? The answer is accreditation. The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) establishes standards for ongoing quality, rigor and professionalism that online schools and traditional institutions must meet in order to be accredited.

DOE-approved accreditation agencies such as the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the Distance Education and Training Council, and other regional and specialized agencies review online schools and degree programs and grant accreditation to those that meet the DOE's guidelines. By attending an accredited online school, you can be sure that you aren't falling victim to a diploma scam or "degree mill."

A degree or certificate from an accredited online school tells potential employers that your credential meets the DOE's quality standards, and it ensures that your credits are transferable to other institutions of higher education should you decide to pursue a graduate program. Accredited online schools are also able to offer federal and state financial aid to students.

So when you start your search for an online school, be sure to find out whether it is accredited by either asking them directly or visiting the DOE or CHEA websites. After all, your educational future is worth a little extra research.
