Special features of the program
Many within the engineering profession acknowledge that today's undergraduate engineering education has its shortcomings. For a variety of reasons, students obtaining bachelor's degrees today are lacking in several key areas (technical and non-technical). Recently, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) assembled a team of industry and academic professionals who were charged with creating a long-term strategic plan that addresses these shortcomings. Their comprehensive report provided recommendations for improving civil engineering education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the 21st century.
During the development of the MCE program, NU utilized the findings of the ASCE report. As a result, the program provides a comprehensive examination of the technical side of engineering. The MCE program also addresses the administrative issues faced by today's engineers. Topics covered, therefore, range from how to perform a non-linear dynamic frame analysis to how to run a consulting office. We have combined the best of both worlds—a graduate degree in civil engineering and an MBA.
Design portfolio
Students must compile a portfolio that will contain copies of all of their design projects from the 6 seminars. It enables the student, faculty and Program Director to see at a glance the extensive growth the student has experienced through this rigorous program. The portfolio is presented to the faculty and program director during the residency week as the final requirement for your degree.
