Like other bachelor’s degrees, they typically consist of about 120 credits and take approximately four years to complete when studying full time. This time may be shorter for students who have already completed undergraduate credits from other programs.  

Online ministry programs may conduct their classes synchronously (live classes that occur for everyone at the same time) or asynchronously (without a set schedule, allowing you to complete the coursework at your own pace). Most online programs typically include a combination of both types of classes.  

Though they may sound similar, a bachelor’s degree in religious studies or spirituality studies is different from a bachelor’s degree in ministry. These majors are typically more interdisciplinary and examine the role of religion and spirituality throughout history and cultures.

Not only does accreditation ensure you’ll receive a quality education, but without it you can’t apply for federal financial aid. Plus, you may not be able to transfer credits towards other academic programs.  

From there, specific programs may be accredited by industry-specific accreditation agencies. Ministry and other faith-based degree programs, for instance, may be accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) or the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS).  

Admissions and prerequisites

Faith-based colleges and universities generally have an application and admissions process just like any other school. First, you must apply to the school directly. This typically involves filling out an application with your personal information plus supporting documents such as:  

• High school diploma or GED, plus transcripts from any other college they’ve attended 
• A personal essay or statement 
• Letter(s) of recommendation from teachers, professional supervisors or religious leaders 

Once admitted to the school itself, students usually apply for or declare their major sometime in their second year once they’ve completed the program’s prerequisites courses. Other schools may take a different approach and have first-year students apply for their major of choice concurrently with their application to the school.  

Some schools may also require students to complete an interview and/or submit an additional letter of recommendation from a pastor or other faith-based leader to ensure that the student is a good fit for the program.
